After measuring Manchester, we pointed the same scan at Austin, Texas — the 16 questions a patient actually asks ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, scored 0–100 on how often each practice is genuinely recognised and recommended. If Manchester was wide open, Austin is wider.
Nobody scored above 57
The top of the Austin table was South Austin Dental Associates at 57/100, followed by Forest Family Dentistry (56) and a tight cluster of Austin Artistic Dental and Enamel Dentistry (53 each). The median score across the twelve ranked practices was just ~44. Where Manchester at least had one practice break 60, Austin’s entire market is packed between the mid-30s and the high-50s.
When the category leader only scores 57, there is no incumbent in the AI answer. Whoever fixes their visibility first effectively owns it.
Strong on one engine, weak on the next
Austin’s leader showed the same split we saw in Manchester: South Austin Dental Associates scored 70 on Perplexity but only 46 on ChatGPT. A patient using Perplexity might be sent straight to them; a patient using ChatGPT might never hear their name. Each assistant builds its answer from different sources, so visibility has to be earned on each one.
Manchester vs. Austin
Across both cities the verdict is the same: AI does not yet have a confident answerwhen asked to recommend a local dentist. Manchester’s leader (65) edges Austin’s (57), but in both markets the median practice sits in the mid-40s — effectively absent from the answer that 45% of consumersnow rely on (BrightLocal, 2026). That’s not a problem; for the practice that moves first, it’s the opening.
